IIT Bombay is a small township in itself. Consciously developed, the campus has retained and increased its green cover, rich in natural flora and fauna. It is located is located at Powai, which is an eastern suburb in the North-Eastern part of Mumbai.
One can travel by Autorickshaws / Taxis to reach IIT from the nearest stations (Autorickshaws, however do not go further south than Sion and Bandra). For longer distance, you can use either the BEST Bus Network or the Mumbai Local train System. Those coming by Central Railway Suburban train will have to get down at Kanjur Marg, Vikhroli or Ghatkopar which are the nearest stations from IITB. If you are coming by the Western Railway Suburban train you will have to get down at Andheri, Bandra, Goregoan or Malad.
History 
Planning for the institute at Mumbai began in 1957 and the first batch of 100 students was admitted in 1958. In 1961, by an Act of Parliament, the institute was declared an institution of national importance. IIT Bombay was established with the cooperation and participation of the UNESCO, utilising the contribution of the Government of USSR
Campus 
The major facilities are:
  • Convocation Hall: A huge convocation hall to conduct various events.
  • IDC Auditorium: The Industrial Design Centre’s (IDC auditorium is used for conducting institute seminars, lectures, etc, besides screening a weekly movie on Thursdays
  • Library: It is in the Main Building with all major facilities such as CD - Rom, CCOD, automated book - issue
  • Banks: The SBI, Canara Band and Saraswati Co-op. Bank  are located in the campus
  • Post Office: It is situated at the Y - Point Gate (YP)
  • Printing Press: The IIT Printing Press prints many of our students publications among other things like printing the full stationery, brochures, forms, etc. for any purpose relating to IIT
  • IIT Market: There is a market at YP both inside and outside the campus. (No wonder its called the market gate by bus conductors). Apart from this there is a Co-op (IIT Consumers CO-op. Society) in the MB (Main Building) for books and stationery. Books are also available at YP. There's a cycle shop near H8 & a cobbler's shop near H1
  • Students' Activity Centre (SAC): It has a as gymnasium, a squash court and facilities foe gymnastics.
  • Hospital:  There is a 60 bed hospital with full time doctors and visiting specialists. The hospital has its own pathological labs, x - ray & ECG facilities and a physiotherapy section too.
  • Gymkhana: The Students’ Gymkhana along with its infrastructure is an organization to foster and develop all student activities in the Institute. It aims at promoting and developing organizational abilities in students.
  • Women’s Cell: It was established in 2002, in accordance with the Supreme Court ruling of 1997 on the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace

Placement Information
The placement cell is very active in the institute and it provides excellent job placement for the students.
Student Activities
The major student activities are:
  • Quiz Club: It is responsible for the resurgence of quizzing and other literary events in IIT Bombay
  • Scrabble Club: It intends to hold workshops, fundaes sessions, Scrabble based puzzles, competitions, tournaments, etc.
  • The Speakers’ Club: It organizes speaking events, debating, extempore speaking, elocution and jamming
  • Hobbies Club: It includes hobbies like electronics, astronomy, HAM radio and aeromodelling
  • Mountaineering Club: The club organizes regular weekend treks in the Sahayadris, to provide a respite from the rigourous of IITian life and to keep people in touch with Nature
