Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is located just on the outskirts of the city of Guwahati and is well connected to other parts of the country by road, rail or air. There are direct air services from/to Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata with connectivity to all major cities in the country and direct train services from/to all the metropolis and other major cities. The institute is located around 20 km from the heart of the city and around 40 min drive from the airport. To reach the institute from the city, there is an Institute bus service that runs regularly to and from the city.
History 
IIT Guwahati is the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995.
Campus 
The major facilities are:
  • Labs: The IIT has well equipped labs
  • Spacious classrooms: The lecture hall complex has four lecture halls that have the capacity to accommodate more than 250 people
  • Communication centre: The communication centre has the central library and the computer centre
  • Indoor sports stadium: It has the synthetic badminton, table tennis and squash courts, gymnasium and the Students Gymkhana office
  • Guest house and accommodation facilities: the institute also has a 72-room Guest House with faculty, staff quarters, married students’ flat-lets, eight men’s and one women’s hostels with single occupancy rooms make the residential component of the infrastructure
  • Swimming pool
  • Gigabit Ethernet backbone with access points in every hostel room, an internal EPABX, high capacity internet connections
  • Two banks in the campus with ATM centres

Placement Information
The Training and Placement Cell of the Institute centrally handles all aspects of campus placements for the graduating students of all Departments. The T & P Cell is well equipped with excellent infrastructure to support each and every stage of the placement processes.
Student Activities 
The major student activities are:
  • Cultural Board: Organizes various cultural events and competitions
  • Sports Board: It organizes and promotes all extracurricular activities in the field of Sports and any other items referred by the Students' Senate
  • Students Welfare Board: The Students' Welfare Board shall broadly address the overall well being of the students of the institute. Its scope of activities shall include among various welfare activities counselling services to students, with Counselling Cell as a sub-committee of the Students' Welfare Board
  • IITG Student Gymkhana Council : It promotes the objectives of fostering extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, welfare of students and their stay on the campus
