IIT Roorkee is well connected to Delhi by rail and road. It is situated on National Highways 58 and 73 and is on Amritsar-Howrah main rail route. Some trains which are convenient for travelling between Delhi and Roorkee are New Delhi-Dehradun-New Delhi Shatabdi Express and Dehradun-New Delhi-Dehradun Janshatabdi Express. The nearest airport is located at Jollygrant, Dehradun. However, New Delhi is the preferred airport. National Highway 58 from New Delhi to the higher reaches of the Himalayas passes via Roorkee. There are frequent bus services to this place from the Maharana Pratap Inter State Bus Terminal (Kashmere Gate) Delhi.
History
IIT Roorkee has completed 150th year of its existence in October 1996. On September 21, 2001, an Ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it as the nation's seventh Indian Institute of Technology.
Campus
The major facilities are:
  • Well equipped libraries with a number of books, e-journals and computer centre
  • Banks: There are two banks on-campus: the Punjab National Bank and the State Bank of India
  • Institute Childcare Centre: IIT Child Care Centre (CCC)is a part of IIT Adarsh Bal Niketan (ABN), which takes care of the children of women employees which are in the age-group of 6 weeks to 10 years/ working couples/ girl students/ research scholars
  • Cafeteria: The institute has many caféterias, which have emerged as the students' favorite haunts. Apart from the all-night canteens, which are present in each hostel, there are 3 major cafés on campus, namely Nescafé, Alpahar and the University Canteen
  • Accommodation facilities
  • Post Office: The campus has a post office within its premises which is situated near the U.G. club
  • Railway Reservation Counter: For the convenience of students, the Indian Railways has set up a computerized railway reservation counter on-campus
  • Institute Hospital: The Institute Hospital has a very modest beginning and was started in the form of a dispensary for students and staff-community
  • Institute Dairy: The institute has a dairy which maintains a regular supply of milk and butter to all the residents and messes, as per their requirements

The Training and Placement Office in the institute provides placement for the students. The placement is conducted in three phases.
Student Activities 
The major student activities are:
  • Hobbies Club: The Hobbies Club conducts various activities related to gardening, photography, star gazing and web designing.
  • UG Club: It deals with various sports activities such as pool, billiards, snookers etc
  • PG Club: It deals with table tennis, foot ball and caroms.
