NIT Patna is situated on the South bank of river Ganges behind Gandhi Ghat, one of the most important and sacred places of Patna. The Institute campus is 8 Km from the Patna junction railway station and 20 Km from the Jai Prakash Narayan International Airport, Patna. The entrance to the institute is from Ashok Rajpath and it is about 3 Km from the famous Gandhi Maidan. The Institute is residential in nature and provides residential facilities to its students as well as teachers as per availability. Its 60 acres campus has a picturesque river view.
History 
National Institute of Technology Patna is the 18th National Institute of Technology created by the Ministry of H.R.D. Government of India after rechristening the erstwhile Bihar College of Engineering Patna on 28. 01. 2004. NIT Patna marked its humble beginning in 1886 with the establishment of pleaders survey training school which was subsequently promoted of Bihar College of Engineering Patna in 1924. This made this institute the 6th Oldest Engineering Institute of India.
National Institute of Technology Patna has been declared as an Institute of National Importance and has been granted a fully Autonomous Status by MHRD, Government of India.
Campus
The major facilities are:
  • Banking facilities: The institute has a fully functional extension branch of Allahabad Bank within the institute premises
  • Computer lab: Every department has a fully operational computer lab
  • Hostel facilities: Three boys’ hostel and one girls’ hostel
  • Internet facility: The institute is using a 4 MB leased line on optical fibre from RailTel to provide Internet connectivity throughout the campus. This includes Wi-Fi connectivity all over the campus and Internet connectivity to every department and to the hostels.
  • Library: The Institute maintains a central Library which has over 50,000 books and about 1,100 internationally acclaimed e-journals and works
  • Medical facilities: The institute has made arrangement for a permanent doctor who has a fixed chamber within the institute premises
  • Security: The institute administration lays utmost significance to the students, employees and its assets. Private security agency provides 24 hour security cover

Placement Information 
The Placement and Training cell ensures that every student undergoes compulsory vocational training and summer internship at the best research institutes and reputed technical organizations of the country. The major societies of the students are:
  • Cultural Society - Each year this society organizes the cultural extravaganza under the name Mélange - the melting pot of talents.
  • Common Room Society - The common rooms society organizes various indoor games' competitions like Chess, Carom, Table Tennis, Badminton, and Su-doku championship.
  • Outdoor Society - The outdoor society conducts all field events like Cricket, Football, Volley ball, Javelin throw, Discuss throw and also includes the Athletic Society under its realms which conducts all the Athletic events
