NIT-T is in Tiruchirappalli (also known as Trichy or Tiruchy). It is located about 22 km from Tiruchurapalli Jn / Central Bus stand on the Trichy-Thanjavur Highway. The simplest and most economical way to reach NIT-T is by bus. Any city Bus at the Tiruchirappalli Junction will take you to the central bus stand. Board Thanjavur bound route bus. The journey time from Trichy will be around 40 minutes. The executive way of reaching NIT-T will be hiring a taxi.

History 
The National Institute of Technology (formerly known as Regional Engineering College) Tiruchirappalli was started as a joint and co-operative venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964. The college was granted Deemed University Status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Govt. of India in the year 2003 and renamed as National Institute of Technology. NIT-T was registered under Societies Registration Act XXVII of 1975.
Campus
The major facilities are:
  • The computer support group with LAN caters to totally 6000 users across the campus (1600 users at the same time using wired connection and the remaining users through Wireless) and has a 10 Gbps fiber optic backbone
  • Library with more than one lakh documents consisting of technical books, reports, standards and back volumes of journals
  • Hostel and mess facilities for both girls and boys
  • Hospital with resident doctors and proper medical care support
  • Shopping centre that caters to the needs of the students and other residents, the institute has a shopping complex within its premises

  • Physical education department that provides and maintains the sports facilities required by the students and the staff
  • Swimming pool that caters to the students, faculty, and other residents of the campus
  • Security department comprises the Security Officer, three Sergeants and 41 security guards
  • Campus Communication Services (CCS) is a service unit of the E.C.E. department that takes care of the communication needs of the campus residents
  • Estate Maintenance department responsible for the maintenance of the RECT campus spread over an extent of 777.77 acres
